The holiday season is well known to be a stressful one. This year seems even more so.
A few weeks ago I was unable to attend Sunday morning worship with my church, so I turned on the live stream of another church. The pastor, a friend of mine, offered a book he had written on the Serenity Prayer.
Originally written by Reinhold Niebuhr, there are many different versions of the prayer. Most people only are aware of the first few sentences as they have been popularized by Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 step groups.
Here is the version of the full prayer as it appears in my friend’s book. I offer it as a prescription for peace during this stressful season.
God, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as He did,
This simple world as it is,
Not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right,
If I surrender to His will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
May You Enjoy a Merry and Peaceful Christmas,
